Our Daily Bread Community Soup Kitchen
...we are stewards of God’s gifts
300 West Oak Street, Denton, Texas (940) 382-5604, M-F 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.
Just over five years ago, Christ The Servant Lutheran Church joined 16 area churches to start a soup kitchen for the hungry people in Denton. Few came at first. Serving 20 people a day meant we’d had a good turnout. Today the daily average of first meals served is about 130. Our Daily Bread is manned each day by a professional chef and volunteers from the community. Volunteers from 25 Denton area churches work together each noon preparing and serving meals, washing dishes and cleaning up after the kitchen closes. These volunteers come from all walks of life: retirees, students, unemployed, parents with children, just people caring for other people. Our Daily Bread has grown to serve as many as 33,800 lunches to the homeless and hungry each year.
Besides providing meals, Our Daily Bread also raises money each Christmas season to provide gloves, blankets, sweat pants and shirts to help area homeless people stay warm during the winter months.
HelpNet of the Greater Denton Area (940) 382-1913, a social service coordinating agency, also has a staff person on duty each day at Our Daily Bread to help those who need other assistance from local agencies. The aim, with much resulting success, is to steer people towards gainful employment and help them become self sufficient.
